Are there any EU capitals that are surrounded by mountains that are good for skiing and winter sports?

If you have not evaluated it already, I recommend you to seriously consider Milan(Italy’s business capital) in the North of Italy.

Milan is easily reachable by most European & Italian cities via its three airports (Linate — the City Airport, Malpensa — for International Routes, and Bergamo — ideal for Ryanair and Budget Flights), as well as bullet train connections (Freccia Rossa & Italo) stopping at Milano Centrale Station.

Regarding top-notch skiing facilities, Milan is in a particularly lucky position, in fact:

a. Mont Blanc: 2h by car to Courmayeur, Italy; 2.5h by car to Chamonix, France;

b. Cervino /Matterhorn: 2h by car to Cervinia, Italy / 3.5h by train to Zermatt, Switzerland;

c. Dolomites: 3.5h by car to Cortina & Madonna di Campiglio (both in Italy);

d. French Alps: 3h by car to Sestriere, Italy (17km from the French border).

All the four ski destinations above are consistently regarded among the top 20 ski resorts in the planet in the last 40 years.

If you love skiing, the variety, proximity and convenience of Milan is in my opinion truly unbeatable.
